Full course description

Designed for faculty, classified professionals, and administrators, this course delves into the complexities of LGBTQ+ identities and the impact of intersecting identities on student experiences. Participants will explore strategies for addressing mental health disparities, meeting basic needs, and creating inclusive learning environments. The course also covers essential legal protections and policies, equipping participants with the tools to advocate for LGBTQ+ student rights in order to foster a culture of allyship and support.

Outcomes:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, including sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, within historical and contemporary contexts.

  • Analyze the impact of intersectionality on LGBTQ+ student experiences, particularly in relation to mental health disparities and basic needs challenges.

  • Implement culturally competent practices and actionable strategies to foster inclusive and supportive educational environments for LGBTQ+ students.

  • Understand and apply key legal protections and policy frameworks that support LGBTQ+ students' rights and advocate for affirmative policies in educational institutions.

  • Cultivate ongoing professional development in LGBTQ+ advocacy and allyship, equipping yourself with the tools to respond effectively to bias and discrimination.

Time Commitment: approximately 10 hours per week, for a total of 40 hours
