Course Description

Mental Health for Non-Clinicians addresses necessary areas of consideration when working with students experiencing mental distress in the remote environment. Topics covered include strategies for trauma-informed informal assessment of student mental health/basic needs, tools to support student wellness, and the provision of appropriate and effective linkages to equitable resources on and off campus. Included discussion and activities guide dialogue and learning, supplemented by required weekly live sessions facilitated by licensed clinicians in the field. This course is not intended as permission to practice as a mental health provider or for certification or licensure.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of Module 1, participants will be able to:

• Summarize the importance of assessing student wellness to support student success

• Describe strategies for engaging and building rapport with students

• Describe tools for trauma-informed informal assessment of student mental health/basic needs

• Summarize your institution’s mental health and wellness resources

By the end of Module 2, participants will be able to:

• Identify students in need of mental health services

• Identify off-campus mental health and wellness resources

By the end of Module 3, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate effective mental health linkages

• Develop best practices, including self-care, to work effectively in the remote environment

Duration: 3 weeks

Time Commitment: Total 30 hours

Weekly required Zoom sessions: Thursdays, 11:00 am-12:00 pm or 3:00-4:00 pm

Your time commitment will vary based on your level of experience with web technologies and mental health counseling.

Level of Difficulty: Intermediate

The course material is designed for experienced Non Mental Health Clinicians, however, the technology used in this course is designed for novice online learners who should have the following:

  •      Basic computer skills (word processing, email, file management)
  •      Basic internet skills (use of browser, searches, uploading/downloading files)
  •      Familiarity with discussion boards
  •      An open mind and willingness to try new things

Optional Continuing Education Credit

Participants in this course can seek optional professional development/continuing education credits by dual-enrolling in HBM 1594 at Fresno Pacific University. A separate fee due to FPU will apply.
