📘 Description

The Online Course Design Rubric has guided quality online instruction for many years. The 2027 Online Course Design Rubric presents an updated approach to course design and quality. This course prepares faculty to align their online courses with the 2027 rubric—strengthening accessibility, alignment, and learner-centered design before entering formal course review.

🧭 Section Zero: Foundational Skills

A significant update in the 2027 Online Course Design Rubric is the increased emphasis on digital accessibility. Courses reviewed under the 2027 rubric are expected to comply with all applicable federal and state accessibility requirements. This includes course materials from third-party vendors, publishers, and Open Educational Resources (OER). If any required content is not accessible as provided, it must be remediated, or an equivalent accessible alternative must be available before the formal course review begins.

These foundational practices not only help faculty prepare for successful alignment with the 2027 Online Course Design Rubric but also support the creation of more accessible, equitable, and learner-centered online courses for years to come.

🎯 Outcomes

By the successful completion of this course, faculty will be able to:

  1. Comply with applicable federal and state digital accessibility requirements across course materials, including third-party vendor, publisher, and OER content.
  2. Apply the principles of Backward Design to strengthen alignment between course content, assessments, activities, and course learning outcomes.
  3. Use the PopeTech Accessibility Dashboard and/or other campus accessibility tools to evaluate course content, identify potential barriers, and develop a remediation plan.
  4. Prepare an online course for successful alignment with the 2027 Online Course Design Rubric.

🏅 Fulfills

This course is designed for faculty preparing to align an online course with the 2027 Online Course Design Rubric. It does not fulfill a requirement for any @ONE certificate, but it is an important step for faculty and local POCR teams preparing courses for formal review.
