Full course description
Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) in Focus is a course centered on the ways in which principles behind Regular and Substantive Interaction serve as tools for improving course quality by enhancing human interaction in asynchronous online courses. RSI in Focus also includes guidance for how to provide clear evidence of RSI in an online course in order to meet compliance requirements around RSI for accreditation. The course includes four modules: 1) The Heart of Learning, 2) Understanding Frequency, 3) Making Interaction Substantive, and 4) Surfacing RSI for Learning and Review. In addition to providing strategies and tips around RSI practices, RSI In Focus also includes elements of learning theory that undergird practice and guidance for self-paced activities to improve and show evidence of RSI in online courses. This course is self-paced and takes ten to twenty hours to engage with content pages, complete embedded activities, and complete the four quizzes designed to validate and reinforce learning.
Outcomes:
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Recognize how guidance, monitoring, and feedback serve as a heuristic for instructor presence in an asynchronous online course.
- Explain the connection between formative feedback as a foundational method of instruction and Regular and Substantive Interaction as a statutory mechanism.
- Audit a course for the types and frequencies of required and optional interactions and plan for improvements to the course that can enhance learning.
- Create a communication plan that includes bi-directional methods of interaction between teacher and student, opportunities and requirements for interaction between students, and clear expectations for frequency of interaction commensurate with course length and credit load.
- Create a reviewer guide so that a course reviewer or evaluator will be able to easily locate evidence of RSI in an online course.
Time Commitment: Ten to twenty hours of self-paced engagement
Level of Difficulty: Beginner to advanced, based on activities
Certificate of Completion: To receive the Certificate of Completion, you need to view all pages within the modules and complete the four quizzes with a score of at least 80 percent on each quiz. You can take the quizzes as many times as needed, which are designed to reinforce learning.
